The Munro Letters 1914-1917: Letters Home from the Front

The Oakville Historical Society maintains an extensive archival collection covering various aspects of the history of Oakville and the former Trafalgar Township including a physical and virtual Collection devoted to Oakville during World War 1. One of the virtual exhibits contains over 191 pieces of correspondence as well as period photographs related to Hugh Gordon Munro entitled “The Munro Letters 1914-1917: Letters Home from the Front”.

Hugh Munro and his close friend George Brock Chisholm attested into the 37th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in May 1915 and both served at the Front in Belgium and France with the 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders). Chisholm would be a Captain by the war’s end but Monro was killed in action on the Somme in September 1916.

As Hugh Munro served with the 15th Battalion, researchers at the Oakville Historical Society contacted the 15th Battalion CEF Memorial project in 2024 for assistance with their virtual project dealing with Monro’s letters. The Project supplied background information to help clarify some of the content of the letters and period 15th Battalion specific documents to expand the details on Munro’s service.
