As part of the Centenary of Vimy Ridge, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) in partnership with the Vimy Foundation, undertook the construction of a new Visitor Education Centre at the site of the Vimy memorial in France that would open on April 9, 2017. 15th Battalion CEF Memorial Project Chairman, Brigadier General (ret) Greg Young made a proposal to VAC that the original 15th Battalion Vimy cross, erected on the battlefield over some of the battalion’s Fallen on April 10, 1917, be returned to Vimy for the Centenary as part of the Centre’s inaugural opening exhibit. The plan was accepted by VAC and with the cooperation of the 48th Highlanders of Canada Regimental Museum, the cross was returned to Vimy where it was on display from April 2017 to April 2018.
