Letters and Diaries – Overview

The Letters and Diaries section of the web site presents original letter images and transcriptions associated with members of the 15th Battalion.

How the Letters section is organized

Letters are grouped by Soldier so that visitors can easily see all of the letters associated with the same person. The Soldier records on this site exist primarily for that purpose.

The 48th Highlanders Museum maintains the definitive Soldier record. The Soldier records on this site are not intended to duplicate the Museum database. They contain only the information needed to identify the Soldier, group related Letters and, where available, link to the corresponding Museum record.

Normal workflow

  1. Create the Soldier grouping record if one does not already exist.
  2. Create the Letter post and select the related Soldier.
  3. Add the transcription and other Letter information.
  4. If scans are available, use the managed Letter-image upload process.

The relationship is maintained automatically: when a Letter is linked to a Soldier, the corresponding linked-Letter information on the Soldier record is updated.
