Arleux

The battle honour Arleux was awarded to the 15th Bn for operations conducted on 29 April to 1 May 1917. These actions occurred during the Battle of Arleux which was conducted as part of the larger Battle of Arras, 9 April to 16 May 1917.

In the opening phase of the Battle of Arras the Canadian Corps had captured Vimy Ridge.  British formations to the Canadian right however were having difficulties with numerous positions including the Arleux Loop at the village of Arleux-en-Gohelle 12 miles south-east of Arras. Early in the morning of 28 April units of the 1st Canadian Division 2nd Brigade attacked and captured the positions in the Arleux Loop and successfully held off a determined counterattack.

On the evening of the 29th the 15th Bn moved from their positions at Farbus Wood on Vimy Ridge into the front line in front of Arleux Wood.  The front line was quiet that evening but B.H.Q. positions were heavily shelled. On 1 May there was an inter-company exchange of positions.  Number 4 Company now in the front was heavily shelled with numerous casualties.  The unit was relieved by the 2nd Bn C.E.F. at midnight on the 1st and the unit made their way back to Maison Blanche Camp. There were 29 casualties suffered during this rotation into the front lines.  This battle honour was not one of the 10 selected for emblazing on the Regimental Colour.
